Indianapolis, Ind. — Despite the growing trend to send manufacturing facilities overseas, Indy Hanger, a division of Innovative Fabrication, began manufacturing a greener, galvanized steel hanger here in Indianapolis.
These “greener” hangers, distributed by Brown and Pratt, and available through drycleaner Fabric Care Center and its Gold Star Home Delivery service, are creating jobs for Hoosiers and preserving the environment. Fabric Care Center is partnering with Brown and Pratt to use these galvanized steel hangers as much as possible in their production process.
By diversifying into manufacturing hangers with galvanized steel, Indy Hanger has reduced the amount of laid off staff. Moreover, if American dry cleaners were to embrace this greener hanger, it could employ 25 more Hoosiers.
Upon learning of the tariffs on Chinese hangers, Innovative Fabrication Company expressed that it could compete with hanger brokers that sell the Chinese hangers to American dry cleaners and industrial markets. Indy Hanger was born from the philosophy that American labor and American steel can compete with a little help in leveling the playing field.
Fabric Care Center remains committed to recycling hangers no matter where the origin. As Indy Hanger expands its greener hanger line, Fabric Care Center will embrace the new lines as they become available.
“It’s a greener hanger and it puts Hoosiers to work,” said Tom Prionas, general manager of Fabric Care Center. “It wasn’t a hard decision.”
Galvanized steel hangers do not rust and do not need to be painted; thus no hazardous chemicals are used to paint them. This gives them a longer life so the hangers can be recycled again and again.
Galvanized steel hangers are silver in appearance, not brown or painted white as most that are commonly used. Currently, Indy hanger is the only galvanized steel hanger on the market. Almost all other hangers are made with foreign steel and labor. Brown and Pratt has stepped forward to market and distribute Indy Hanger products.
Gil Smith, sales manager for Brown and Pratt, said we as a society are leaving far too much waste for future generations. “Because of the reusability of the hangers, there will be fewer of these galvanized hangers in landfills,” Smith said.
As of last year, only one hanger company remained in the U.S., M&B Hanger located in Leeds, Alabama. Also, according to the Dry Cleaning and Laundry Institute, in 2008 the Department of Commerce instituted trade tariffs on China to protect the last remaining hanger manufacturer in the U.S.
