INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The sounds of bagpipes, drums, musket volleys, and cannon salutes will be a part of the annual Memorial Day program at the Hoosier Patriot Memorial on the grounds of Washington Park East Cemetery and Funeral Center, 10612 E. Washington St., on Monday, May 25.
The program begins at 3 p.m., with a prelude at 2:45 featuring the Sons of the American Revolution’s musket volley and the Murat Highlanders bagpipe and drum musical presentation.
The keynote speaker will be Major General R. Martin Umbarger, the Adjutant General of the Indiana National Guard. Other military and civilian dignitaries are expected to attend and be a part of the program that will offer special recognition to Hoosiers currently in military service, as well as veterans. Indiana National Guard soldiers and airmen and women will be recognized; some will speak to the assembled crowd, as well.
The program will also include the posting and retreating of the colors, a wreath laid by Major General Umbarger and State Command Sergeant Major James M. Brown, musical selections, poetry, and prayers.
After the program, expected to last about one hour, visitors are invited to remain for refreshments.
The Hoosier Patriot Memorial was dedicated on Veterans’ Day in 2007 in honor of the Indiana National Guard.
