(Carmel, IN August 12, 2009) – Accent On Business is participating in the data collection of the performance and usability of a multimedia, internet-based speech and language program specifically targeting the communication concerns and cultural competence of foreign national nurses, physicians, researchers, and other healthcare professionals practicing in the U.S.
The technology integrates instruction to build clearer oral English with contextual information about U.S. culture, healthcare communication culture, idioms and figures of speech relevant to medical settings. It is being developed as part of a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant project. While waiting for the second phase of funding, the developers are making the technology available to healthcare providers.
According to Ellen Dunnigan, President and CEO of Accent On Business, “Effective U.S. English communication and the understanding of the U.S. culture is a critical skill for U.S. healthcare providers in both patient care and in their relationships with the patient and family. The web-learning tool includes content and activities tailored specifically for the healthcare setting. While most of the users will want person-to-person instruction and clarification with one of our speaking skills coaches, this technology will allow for substantial practice during the time not spent with a “live” coach. What’s great about this is that people will be able to access the web-learning program 24/7, from any computer, for at least a year at no cost!”
