Filmmaker/Comedian Mark Malkoff Receives Key to the City from Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard
(Carmel, IN) – Filmmaker/Comedian Mark Malkoff received a “Key to the City” from Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard yesterday afternoon as part of his attempt to be presented 100 Keys to the City from U.S. Mayors across the country in 4 Weeks. The project which goes until November 1st is being sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. Daily videos are being shown at www.markmalkoff.com.
Malkoff set out in a car on October 5th and in nineteen days has managed to have 70 mayors present him their key to the city including Mayor Tom Barrett (Milwaukee, WI), Mayor Pam Iorio (Tampa, FL), and Mayor Stephen Reed (Harrisburg, PA). Carmel’s Key to the City makes number 71.
In exchange for each key, Malkoff is having mayor’s assign him small community service tasks. Lancaster, PA Mayor Richard Gray had Malkoff clean up after police horses. Mayor Robert Lederer (Fairfax, VA) had Malkoff swim in the town fountain collecting coins. Mayor Pam Iorio (Tampa, FL) had Malkoff volunteer at a kids afterschool program. In Carmel, Mayor Jim Brainard assigned Malkoff to help the Carmel Street Department with seasonal landscaping in one of the city’s many roundabouts.
Mark Malkoff is best known for “Mark Lives in IKEA” where he lived and slept in an IKEA store in Paramus, NJ for an entire week.
Some interesting highlights from the project:
-Malkoff’s videos have featured mayors doing crazy things such as Falls Church, VA Mayor Robin Gardner singing Ethel Merman, Hummelstown, PA Mayor Bradley Miller shaving his mustache on a dare, and LaFayette, AL Mayor Matt Hurst playing leapfrog.
-Malkoff was awarded the first key in the history of several cities including Frederick, MD, Virginia Beach, VA, and Hampton, VA.
-Some mayors presented Malkoff a key on less than two hours notice of being contacted.
-Multiple mayors contacted Malkoff personally asking if they could award him a key.
-Due to lack of time Malkoff had to turn down several cities that approached him.
