Small Business Enters 6th Year through Focus and Flexibility:
Art & Texture celebrates its sixth year in business this February. Specializing in decorative wall treatments and furniture refinishing and restoration, this local small business has stayed true to its vision; yet, has always been willing to be “flexible.”
What began as a 40th birthday present to owner, Mark Roger, from his wife, has gone from a “one year to make the decorative painting business go” into a thriving business and his passion. Roger’s goal was to open an art studio with a collaborative of local artists providing decorative arts to residential and commercial clients.
“Working directly with client’s onsite has made all the difference in client satisfaction,” says Roger. The desire to differentiate him, Roger adopted business principles honed over the years as a business consultant. Consumer focus, creating an experience for clients, and adopting unique pricing principles helped create his brand identify.
Even in these tough economic times, A&T has seen growth and expansion. “Our pricing structure has helped us be more successful. Wall projects are based upon a square foot price which keeps projects within budget,” says Roger. This sq ft pricing is unique for the industry and ensures value to the client.
“Clients can make the most of what they have by refinishing furniture with our decorative finishes,” says Roger, “and instead of a room of mismatched pieces, they can have a consistent look.” Customarily, A&T refinishes a piece of furniture is half the replacement cost. In 2009, furniture refinishing and restoration grew 25% over the previous year.
Being flexible has been paramount to our success. Walls, furniture, murals, ceilings, hardware, light fixtures – they do that and more. ‘We annually teach art classes at Mickey’s Camp, have worked with parents/students at local charter schools and provide our services to local charities on a regular basis,” says Roger.
A&T restores treasured family furniture and is often asked to complete more personal art projects. “We just finished a mural of the original To Kill a Mockingbird book jacket which we completed on canvas,” says Roger, “it was special gift from a mother for her grown daughter’s first home.
Since 2004, A&T has worked with some of the largest designers and builders throughout the Midwest; yet, specialty artists focus on one project at a time. “As testament to our attention to detail,” says Roger, “our client referral program continues to be an overwhelming success. We take pride in the enormous amount of repeat business received from passed clients.”
