Carmel, Ind., 1/26/2012 — Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation received two coveted awards at last week’s annual gathering of the Indiana Park and Recreation Association.
Sue Dillon, a lifelong Hamilton County resident and environmental advocate, received the organization’s Volunteer of the Year Award. In addition, Founder’s Park was recognized by the organization with the Park Development Award in the $750,000+ budget category.
Dillon was recognized for her significant voluntary contribution in support of Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation. “Her loyalty, dedication, and hard work make her very deserving of this honor,” says Mark Westermeier, CCPR director. “She is a tireless promoter of our department and understands the vision and mission better than most. Sue is always among the first to volunteer and lend a helping hand.”
Dillon founded Citizens for Greenspace, a group of citizens who partner with local schools, parks and city organizations, developers, scout troops and city government to promote the importance of trees to the community, and was its first president and guiding force for 23 years. She began volunteering with Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation in 1991 and served on the very first park board. She continued to serve as a member for 15 years and was president of the board for seven years during the planning and construction of Central Park and the Monon Community Center.
Founder’s Park opened last summer. Designed by The Schneider Corporation with input from a committee of community leaders, city officials, local businesses and park neighbors, the park is located on 35 acres at the northeast corner of the intersection of 116th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway in Carmel. The design allows for both active and passive activities including a geological education play area, fitness and nature trails and rugby and lacross fields. Founders Pavilion – with rooms for meetings, classes and rentals – is located near the center of the park, overlooking a 10-acre pond.
About Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR)
Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) serves the recreation, fitness, and nature needs of the community, manages and develops existing spaces and resources and creates a sustainable future for parks and recreation programs through a financially viable and environmentally conscious parks system. CCPR manages and maintains more than 500 park acres and numerous recreation facilities, including the Monon Community Center. The Timmy Foundation based in Indianapolis, IN is receiving a $10,000 grant from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation in recognition of financial representative Mark Wise’s outstanding volunteer commitment, as part of the company’s 17th annual national Community Service Award program.
Wise, a Carmel resident, is one of 26 Northwestern Mutual financial professionals being recognized nationally as a top volunteer. Wise presented The Timmy Foundation with a check for $10,000 from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. The grant money will be utilized to help strengthen the operation of the medical supply warehouse and establish scholarships for students.
“Mark makes positive contributions for both clients and the Indianapolis community,” said Northwestern Mutual Foundation president Kimberley Goode. “This effort, along with many others supported by the Northwestern Mutual field force, helps us secure future generations, and we’re excited to see The Timmy Foundation continue their essential work in Indianapolis.”

Since Northwestern Mutual started the Community Service Award program in 1995, the company has donated more than $3 million on its representatives’ behalf to over 300 nonprofit organizations across the country. The Community Service Award program is open to more than 9,000 Northwestern Mutual financial representatives, assistant financial representatives and financial representative interns, recognizing their individual dedication to charitable organizations and philanthropic projects.
“Timmy Global Health empowers American students and volunteers to tackle the world’s most pressing problems,” said Wise. “Every year, our work impacts thousands of underserved patients, families, and communities at home and in the developing world. Northwestern Mutual’s generosity will strengthen Timmy’s outreach, and I am grateful for their support,” he added.

The AlphaGraphics business center located at 12955 Old Meridian St., Suite 103, Carmel, IN will sponsor its third annual food drive for the entire month of July to benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. It’s easy to participate. Just call 844-6629 or email Rhonda, rkile@alphagraphics.com, and a food donation box or barrel will be placed in your office with accompanying flyers and posters supporting this worthy cause. The box or barrel will be picked up at the end of July and delivered to the Gleaners warehouse. AlphaGraphics is also serving as a drop off for those wishing to deliver food directly to us. For more information visit our website, us605@alphagraphics.com

“Last year, with the help of over 50 businesses, nearly 7,000 lbs of non perishable items were collected,” stated Michael Kile, business center owner. “Each year more businesses come on board increasing the contributions. We hope 2011 will be no exception. This year we are adding an AlphaGraphics Fight Against Hunger virtual food bank. Once this is set up people will be able to purchase food on line that will go directly to the Gleaners warehouse to be distributed throughout the community.”

Typically food pantries see increased donations during the holidays when the public is in the giving spirit. Summer months see a sharp decrease in donations but the need for support is there all year.

AlphaGraphics plans, produces and manages visual communications for individuals and small to medium businesses as well as departments within larger corporations. Backed by state-of-the-art technology, the world’s highest quality standards and a global network, the company’s trained and experienced team members are committed to delivering creative solutions that allow customers to communicate more confidently and effectively.
