(January 2010,Carmel, IN) – The Carmel Fire Department (CFD) continues to look at ways to improve a new way to load hose onto the fire truck that is more efficient to load and unload than previous methods. Station 44 B crew invented a concept, which was then further modified and tested several times and evolved into what is now known as the Roundabout Hose Load. The load was named after the shape of the newly formed hose load and after the fact that Carmel now has numerous roundabout intersections.

With the proper training, this hose load is quicker and easier to load and deploy than almost any other hose load out there. The Roundabout Hose Load needs minimal straightening to get out folds and bends, will not get caught up in the front yard on trees and bushes, and is easier to advance into a structure. It is believed that no other department has ever used this type of hose load before Station 44 B crew developed it. Two videos were made and placed on YouTube which demonstrate this hose load. To date, the videos have over 5,000 views. Click here to view the video or do a search for Roundabout Hose Load.

Several departments across the nation have contacted CFD for more information about the Roundabout Hose Load. Roundabout Hose Load training sessions with CFD Station 44’s crew have already been conducted with the Indianapolis Fire Department. Likewise, CFD Station 44’s crew has launched the Roundabout as a new hose load to be taught with the J. Everett Light firefighting program. Departments in the states of Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, and Indiana including the Indianapolis Fire Department are now using the Roundabout Load.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS CELEBRATE NEW INDIANA INDUSTRY STANDARDS

IndianaINterior Design Coalition will be hosting an open house event to celebrate the passing of Senate Bill 337

Indianapolis, IN – June 24, 2009- Interior designers throughout Indiana are celebrating the recent passing of the “Interior Design” bill (Senate Bill 337). The new legislation provides for the voluntary registration of interior designers who meet certain education, experience and examination qualifications to ensure their expertise in all areas of interior design, including adhering to building, fire and municipal codes; enforcing accessibility, environmental and sustainability guidelines as well as selecting and coordinating aesthetics.

Qualified designers, once registered, will be able to use the term “registered interior designer” (RID) after their name. This registry is the platform for consumers and allied industry professionals to evaluate and choose the individuals whose work adheres to national life, health and safety rules.

On July 1, 2009 the bill officially goes into law, which is also the date of the SAFE INterior Design Coalition open house. This event will recognize how far the industry has come and the key individuals who made reaching this legislative milestone possible.

WHAT: SAFE INterior Design Coalition Legislative Win Celebration event
WHEN: Wednesday, July 1, 2009 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
WHERE: i.d.o. Incorporated, 601 N. Capitol Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46204
WHO: Interior Designers and Allied Industry Professionals

This event is a kick-off of what is yet to come to the design community. In the past, the interior design profession has had a lack of standardization; now with this legislation in place, it establishes the basis for what is and what is not included under this vocation’s umbrella. SAFE INterior Design president-elect Jill Mendoza comments on these industry changes, “These are exciting times to be an interior designer. We now have the legislative backing to substantiate the technical expertise of our profession, and my hope is that SAFE continues to blaze the trail in elevating our industry’s
standards.”

SAFE INterior Design is beginning its efforts to finalize the registration process for the approximately 1,200 interior designers in the state of Indiana. The registry is anticipated to be completed and online by December 2009. Designers who are interested in staying abreast of the registry progress are encouraged to join SAFE INterior Design Coalition.

About the SAFE INterior Design Coalition: The Indiana Interior Design Coalition is the collective voice of Indiana interior designers established to protect public health and safety through the adoption of nationally recognized interior design standards. These standards enable the public to identify qualified interior designers and ensure SAFE (Slip resistant, Accessible, Fire Codes, Ergonomics) environments. More information on the organization and the Interior Design Registry can be found at www.safeinteriordesign.org.

At 10am, this Monday morning, February 23, 2009, members of the Indiana House of Representatives will have the opportunity to vote in support of HB 1589. This legislation received unanimous support from the House Environmental Affairs committee two weeks ago, and the IRC believes HB 1589 has sufficient momentum such that a truly impactful law could be passed this year.

To keep the momentum going, we need your help now to ensure that 1589, authored by State Representative Mary Ann Sullivan, makes it out of the House on Monday!

Let your State Representative know that you support HB 1589, because you are concerned about the growing problem of electronic waste and the urgent need for more and better electronics recycling programs in Indiana.

The Problem: Currently, only a very small percentage of electronic waste in Indiana is being properly recycled.

1.2 million computers and TVs are discarded by Hoosiers annually.

At least 4 pounds of lead is contained in each old computer monitor or television.

There are at least 5 toxic materials found in today’s electronic devices.

There are at least 8 serious health effects of these toxins.

HB 1589 will result in vastly improved electronics recycling infrastructure in Indiana by placing some responsibility on manufacturers of toxic electronic waste to establish electronics collection and recycling programs throughout Indiana.

In addition, this bill will help strengthen the electronics recycling infrastructure in Indiana, thus creating new green jobs.

Take Action Now:

Please tell your State Representative that this bill is a win-win for Indiana’s environment and our economy.

Email your legislators over the weekend or call their offices on Monday morning before 10am, to express your support for HB 1589.

To confirm your State Legislative Representative, click here and type in your zipcode+four.

Or email your legislator this weekend. You can find their email by clicking here.
